Well-known IT components distributor, Ingram Micro, changes its name with effect from 1 October 2010 to Platinum Micro.
As previously announced in July 2010, the MB Technologies Group acquired the remaining 50% of Ingram Micro South Africa and is now the sole shareholder. Under the joint venture agreement the local joint venture was granted the right to use the Ingram Micro name in South Africa until 30 September 2010. Pursuant to the buy-out and the expiration of the licence to use the Ingram Micro name, Ingram Micro South Africa has been re-branded as Platinum Micro. The new name creates a link to the MB Technologies Group’s majority shareholder, Royal Bafokeng Holdings and their extensive platinum interests.
MB Technologies Group CEO, Glenn Fullerton, said that apart from the change of name it is business as usual for the distributor, which will continue to focus mainly on components and operate as an independent division within the MB Technologies Group. The change in shareholding has been in place for a few months now post the Competition Commissions’ approval of the transaction.
“Looking forward, Platinum Micro will focus on components, where we have top brands including AirLive, Asus, Billion, Kingston, Microsoft, Samsung, Seagate, Targus, Yealink, and on further development of niche markets,” said General Manager, Ricky Correia. “We are also taking on new products with exclusive agency rights that are ideal for the retail market and have already proved highly successful in the US and UK.”
Correia added that the technology surrounding these new products, both of which break conventional boundaries in the field of charging mobile phone and IT products, is green.
“We expect demand to grow exponentially over the next two years. In the local market major IT, leisure and home goods retailers are already expressing strong interest ahead of the formal launch of the products later this year. We have a strong base and the green factor is a powerful incentive. Overall, Platinum Micro is well placed to achieve growth.”
